Hermès

Thierry Hermès, Hermès’s founding father and a harness-maker and saddler, started a workshop in Paris in 1837. His son, Émile-Maurice Hermès, took over the Maison in 1878.

Hermès made its first foray into watchmaking in 1912 when Thierry Hermès’ granddaughter was pictured wearing a pocket watch encased with a leather bracelet strap crafted by her father, Émile-Maurice Hermès. According to the brand, Jacqueline Hermès disliked carrying her pocket watch, which is how the Porte-Oignon, as her father named it, was born.

Hermès debuted its first-ever watch with the name “Hermès” on the dial in 1928 at Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Hermès continued to create “guardians of time” watches over the next couple of decades, collaborating on timepieces with some of the biggest names in Swiss watchmaking, including Jaeger-LeCoultre, Audemars Piguet, Universal Genève, Mido, Cyma, and Ulysse Nardin.

In 1978, the brand launched the iconic Arceau model. Since then, the brand has come a long way from introducing its calibers, H1837 and H1912, in 2012 to launching the Arceau Le temps voyageur in 2022.
