About the Model

The Rolex Explorer as can be indentified in its title, was specifically designed for adventurers and explorers, which became a household name for the Rolex brand. The watch features a simple and elegant design, focused on it's durability and precision instead. This helped the model gain immense popularity and eventually became a model that transcended it's function. The Explorer is also known for its association of the first succesful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, where it is believeved that one of the climbers were wearing the initial prototypes of the Explorer. Over the years to present day, the Explorer has undergone serveral design changes and improvements, but it has always maintained it's rugged and functional aestheic. It has become a true icon and is a testament to Rolex's quality and design. The watch here is the 2021 version of the Rolex Explorer ref. 124270-0001, with a 36mm stainless steel case and bracelet. Styling the iconic black dial, it has luminescent index hour markers and hands to provide excellent legibility in low-light conditions, whilst also incorporating a smooth bezel to give the watch a timeless aesthetic. The watch is powered by Rolex's in-house calibre 3230 movement, which offers power reserve of 70 hours and up to 100m of water resistance. The Discreet Explorer

Launched in 1953 to commemorate the first successful summit of Mount Everest, the Rolex Explorer has long been one of the brand's most iconic models. Designed as a utilitarian sports watch, the Explorer embodies the very essence of Rolex's commitment to creating robust, dependable timepieces. Over the years, the Explorer has evolved through subtle, incremental changes, cementing its status as a fan favorite among collectors who appreciate its understated, cohesive design language.

Introduced in 2021, the Explorer ref. 124270 marked a significant turning point for the collection, as Rolex looked to its own past to inform the future. The watch saw a return to the 36mm diameter that had been synonymous with the Explorer for much of its lifetime, echoing the classic Datejust and Day-Date models. The stainless steel case and Oyster bracelet feature a satin finish, with the exception of the polished flat bezel, which serves to accentuate the watch's construction and presence on the wrist. Inside, the automatic caliber 3230 movement boasts a 70-hour power reserve and Rolex's latest technological advancements, ensuring the Explorer ref. 124270 is a robust and capable timepiece that remains true to the collection's storied heritage.

Quietly Coveted

Given its visual similarities to other Explorer references due to the collection’s virtually unchanging dial and the ref. 124270’s 36mm diameter, it is exceptionally difficult to determine if someone is wearing a ref. 124270 or a vintage Explorer. Nonetheless, the Explorer as a whole is quite a popular piece for celebrities given its truly understated look and under-the-radar execution thanks to its completely brushed finish, with the exception of its bezel. Owned by the likes of Will Ferrel and Keegan Allen (who professed his love for the ref. 124270 to Hodinkee), the ref. 124270 joins the long list of other Explorer references that have received positive plaudits from celebrities for its no-frills approach to luxury watchmaking.
