<p>The first club watch from one of Hong Kong’s preeminent enthusiast groups is every inch what you’d expect of a collab between an incredible indie brand and a crew of impressively discerning collectors</p>

<p>In a development which we at <em>Wristcheck</em> welcome with open arms, <a href="https://wristcheck.com/discover/culturecheck/how-watch-clubs-became-a-pillar-of-horological-culture">crossovers between watch brands and collectors’ clubs</a> have been growing at a steady pace these past three years. Following the release of special pieces for enthusiast groups in a variety of locales across the globe (e.g. Singapore, France, the UAE) Hong Kong is getting its own moment in the sun, courtesy of a new collaboration between local collecting crew, <a href="https://thehorologyclub.com/">The Horology Club</a> (‘THC’) and <a href="https://www.habring2.com/index.php/en/">Habring²</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To celebrate THC’s first anniversary—the group was started by three Hong Kong-based collectors in early 2021 — Richard and Maria Kristina Habring, the watchmaking duo behind the eponymous Austrian brand, have crafted a small run of complicated three-handers. These glean their basic design cues from Habring’s family of ‘Erwin’ models: taking that time-only watch’s classic good looks and robust wearability; and marrying it to a “rather obscure” complication in the form of the deadbeat seconds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Easily misidentified as evidence of a quartz movement, the deadbeat seconds (sometimes also referred to as ‘jumping’ seconds) is peak mechanical watchmaking, causing the seconds hand to tick at a precise frequency of one beat per second. In the metal, this gives the impression of a movement that is regulated using a quartz oscillator, but by crafting a more complex escapement (in which the number of vibrations per second is reduced from 5-6 to just one) an identical effect can be achieved, without the need for any piezoelectric wizardry. “Part of what we love doing at The Horology Club is to highlight some of the watchmakers we think are doing great things within the industry. Habring is definitely one of those brands we noticed early on. The reason why we wanted to do this watch was because we just love how stealthy the ‘deadbeat’ seconds complication is to an unknown person. You really have to be in the know to recognize Habring and understand what it is. Having a ‘deadbeat’ seconds is quite an obscure thing, something that’s not very common in the industry and we love that aspect of it. This is why we chose Habring as our first collaborator,” says Helbert Tsang, co-founder, The Horology Club.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The seamless implementation of a true ‘deadbeat’ seconds is no easy thing. Fortunately, the Habrings have a great deal of experience in this area: so much so, that they’ve become synonymous with technologies like the split-second chronograph and <em>foudroyante</em>. A lot of the innovations of mechanical watchmaking that are of interest at Habring are what we’d politely call ‘anachronisms’ — but over the years, the brand has cultivated a loyal following for these because of the thoughtful and surprisingly cost-effective way in which they’re made.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
According to The Horology Club itself, with this inaugural club watch, the rationale behind selecting such a throwback complication was rooted in the (unabashedly romantic) desire to “observe the precise passage of each second”. The release’s ‘School Piece’ moniker is also a veiled reference to the deadbeat second’s fundamental importance in the history of mechanical watchmaking.</p>

<p>Even if all this talk of complications and beats-per-second doesn’t strike a chord, the ‘THC School Piece’ offers a cogent visual representation of what The Horology Club’s members are all about. As in many of the great enthusiast communities of the world, an appreciation for watchmaking’s heritage is a strong throughline; while there’s an equal emphasis on incorporating contemporary technology and aesthetic mores where it’s beneficial to do so.&nbsp;<br />

That combination of modernity and tradition is plain to see. The visual heft of the 38.5mm case and its concave bezel are amplified by the dial, with the latter being subtly reminiscent of the executions found on vintage Calatravas. Calling to mind Patek Philippe’s illustrious Ref. 565, each individual sector is used to showcase a different finishing technique: the outer track is printed with a classic <em>chemin de fer</em>, while the segment closest to the hands is vertically brushed (with that finishing working effectively against the metal backdrop).&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the middlemost sector, The Horology Club opted to decorate the ‘School Piece’ dial with Breguet numerals — another trope of classical 20th century watchmaking. Cleanly set and raised ever so slightly above the surface of the dial, they’re a fantastic means by which Habring is able to inject variety into the dial, without going the unimaginative route of adding more primary colors or —heaven forbid — a date window. In fact, the only real accent is the use of matte olive: The Horology Club’s very restrained hat-tip to the green watch craze that dominated seemingly every release back in 2021. Granted, that’s not a reference you need be aware of in order to ‘get’ this watch, but like so much in horological culture these days, context is king.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A ravishing addition to Andersen Genève’s irresistible range of world time watches, this new collaboration offers a beautiful fusion of the signature details seen in some of the brand’s finest timepieces over the years and Asprey’s storied heritage</p>

<p>There’s something eternally romantic about world timers — the promise of limitless adventure, the excitement of discovering a home away from home and chance encounters with heart-warming strangers. While there’s no dearth of ultra sophisticated world timers that can map every little detail – right from daylight savings to moon phases, ocean tides and celestial changes – there’s nothing quite elegant as those adorned with cloisonné enamel dials or guilloché patterns in the center.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Louis Cottier, one of the 20th century’s most significant watchmakers, patented the world time complication and made a series of splendid cloisonné enamel dials for Patek Philippe between 1930s and 1950s. Today, there are only a handful of ateliers capable of such aesthetic perfection and one of them is Andersen Genève. “The 1950s was the golden era of watchmaking and Louis Cottier was making the world time watches for Patek Philippe, Rolex and Vacheron Constantin. Our world time watches with the trademark ‘broken’ lugs and dual crowns are Svend Andersen’s tribute to that era and to Cottier,” says Pierre-Alexandre Aeschlimann, owner of Andersen Genève. “We are extremely pleased to present our latest piece – the Andersen Genève x Asprey “Heures du Monde”, which offers a beautiful fusion of our design aesthetics with Asprey’s storied heritage,” he says.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A ravishing addition to Andersen Genève’s irresistible range of world time watches, the “Heures du Monde” brings together the signature details seen in some of their finest timepieces over the years – the triangular lugs, the 21k Blue Gold dial and the “A” shaped hands. Crafted out of 5N red-gold, the 39mm watch is decorated with a bespoke hand guilloché pattern (inspired by Asprey's barley motif), which notches up the quintessential appeal of Andersen Genève’s highly curated watches.</p>

<p>There are two crowns,&nbsp;one at three o’clock for its usual function and the other at nine o’clock for the 24-hour ring and world-time mechanism.The world time display features a 24 hour-ring in silver and a navy blue to indicate day or night respectively. The city disc is printed with the names of 23 cities and an enlarged hollowed “A” for Andersen representing Geneva.&nbsp;Needless to say, the caseback of this watch is equally enticing as its dial – the Vintage A. Schild&nbsp;base movement is decorated with Côtes de Genève and Perlage, and the showstopper is the Blue Gold rotor adorned with hand guilloché to complement the dial.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>Asprey And Luxury Watches&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Limited to 24 pieces, this watch marks an extraordinary collaboration, which is in tune with the trend for double-signed watches. One of the most revered luxury houses from London, Asprey’s association with watches and clocks dates back to the 19th century when the store commissioned special pieces for its rich and famous clients, like the Sultan of Oman. Right from the famed Rolex “Khanjar” to the Patek Philippe Ref. 2499 and Ref. 565, some of the most coveted examples of Asprey-signed watches have been breaking records at auctions recently. At Phillips’ Royal Oak 50th sale this year, an example of the 25654PT with a copper-brown dial signed by Asprey sold for USD 1,036,511 – a world record for any perpetual calendar Royal Oak sold at auction.</p>

<h3>Svend Andersen: The Legend</h3>

<p>Today, the world time complication is seen as the heart and soul of the brand Andersen Genève but if you dig deeper, you will discover the fascinating story of the original founder, Svend Andersen, who started his own worksop in 1980 after having worked with Patek Philippe’s high-end "Atelier des Grandes Complications. During his tenure at Patek Philippe, he worked with Louis Cottier and was smitten by the &nbsp;world time complication.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Andersen’s most intriguing creation was the “Clock in a bottle” which he created using a set of extra long tools created by himself. This was the piece that got him noticed by the big-wigs at Patek Philippe. Over the years, this legendary watchmaker has worked on several complicated watches such as the annual calendar, perpetual calendar, and jumping hour calendars. In 1985, he co-founded the AHCI – Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants in support of outstanding independent watchmakers like F.P. Journe, Kari Voutilainen, Konstantin Chaykin, George Daniel. The community spirit at Andersen Genève is going strong even today. “ We make not more than 20 watches annually and they are done in collaboration with different artists. Our atelier in Geneva has just four watchmakers and we have Svend coming in once every week. We don’t aim to make 500 watches every year, it’s a very exclusive brand that supports artisans outside the atelier as well,” says Aeschlimann.</p>

<p>In the current scenario where it’s impossible to have access to well-made and beautifully crafted watches from top tier brands, Andersen Genève has been offering highly customized timepieces to select collectors world over. Right from the world’s thinnest world timer “Mundus” to the GPHG nominee Celestial Voyager and the much loved Tempus Terrae, there is a range of watches that the discerning can pick and choose for customization. While the case construction remains the same in all variations, the artisanal decorations on the dial can be customized as per a client’s wish. “If you commissioned a unique piece with Vacheron Constantin or Patek Philippe, it could cost over USD 1 million US. However, we can do a bespoke piece under USD 100,000. We don't make watches for ourselves, we &nbsp;make them for our collectors. We don't have any distributors or shops to please, we are a connoisseur’s brand,” says Aeschlimann.</p>

<p>According to Tim Liu, a Taiwan based collector, the flexibility of customization with Andersen Geneve is much better than most independent brands. “I owned a Montre à Tact with a special miniature painting dial and a Worldtime Celestial Voyager with a special map is on the way. Their delivery time is quite reasonable as well. &nbsp;You know nowadays the usual waiting time for an independent watchmaking brand can be over four years,” he says.</p>

<p>Roni Madhvani, an astute collector of vintage watches from Patek Philippe and Cartier is particularly impressed with the world timers from Andersen Geneve. “I was fortunate to see and hold the watches first hand and indeed found them to be lovely and beautiful. <p>Limited to 28 pieces, the Linear Series 1 marks a new milestone for Hautlence. We caught up with MELB Asia’s CEO, Bertrand Meylan, to know more about the brand’s resounding comeback and its corporate synergy with H. Moser & Cie.</p>

<p>Moser’s young and wild sibling, Hautlence is all set for a resounding comeback this year. Run by the Meylan’s family holding company, MELB, the two brands have always had very distinct personalities—while Moser is all about understated haute horology with contemporary vibes, Hautlence challenges the traditional norms in watchmaking with mind-boggling time displays and whacky case designs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the pandemic, as MELB focused all its energies on strengthening Moser (the brand registered a double digit growth in 2020, thanks to key launches like the Streamliner and Vantablack editions), Hautlence took a creative break to refresh its product strategy and brand direction. “In 2020, we decided to have everything under the same roof for both Hautlence and Moser. I think it was a great decision. We also put together a dedicated team, headed by Samuel Hoffmann, to define Hautlence’s new product strategy, marketing and merchandising. We worked on modernizing the look of our watches with new case designs and also new complications. I’m extremely delighted to announce the result of this synergy – the Linear Series 1,” says Bertrand Meylan, CEO of MELB Asia.</p>

<h3>Hautlence 2.0 and the Linear Series 1</h3>

<p>Presented on the brand’s trademark ‘TV screen shape”, the new Linear Series exemplifies Hautlence’s most defining characteristics in an ultra modern timepiece upgraded with better water-resistance and durability. “Our first watch, launched in 2004, featured a jump hour with retrograde minutes, mechanically driven in a novel way. The Linear Series 1 has been designed on the same lines. We want more and more people to recognize Hautlence for not just the complications but also the design language,” explained Meylan. “It was extremely difficult to improve the water-resistance on a rectangular case, but we have achieved that with the Linear (water-resistant up to 10 ATM). The idea is to make the watch more versatile; something that can be worn to the beach in the morning and to a restaurant in the evening. The watch features a dynamic case with a fluted bezel, relief form on the sides and integrated rubber strap,” he says.</p>

<p>Over the years, Hautlence has established its reputation as one of the most daring watchmakers, who consistently play with high-tech materials and outrageous time displays. Right from the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BeAMDLahpea/">Vortex Gamma Tron</a>, which used the patented HL LightColour or the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd69Uw-ht02/">HL2.3 Punk</a> that used three sapphire crystals cut from solid blocks for its case construction, Hautlence has never shied away from experimentation. Thanks to the complex time displays, the dials of most Hautlence watches are three-dimensional and extremely powerful. For the Linear Series 1, the brand has worked with a multi-layer dial where the minute numerals sit on top of the base dial in rhodium-plated brass with a vertical satin finish. The dial has been given a small window to expose the minute cam, which helps the minute hand rotate once every hour and lifts the minute sector as the hour elapses.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The hours are displayed on a graduating scale on the left side of the dial. As seen in the brand’s very first caliber HL, the Linear Series also uses a slim linkage for the hour display. A small white arrow at the end of the linkage points the hour on the scale and once it crosses 12, the snail disengages the probe to release the energy. The linkage then jumps and returns to 1. Besides the retrograde jumping hour, the Linear Series 1 is equipped with a flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock. “We are working on very complex movements, which will take at least two years to develop, meanwhile, we will be focusing on the ‘TV screen’ cases that have always been a strong DNA of the brand. It’s important to surprise our clients with new ways of reading time, so we will continue to work with retrograde and three dimensional jumping hours, best exemplified by the <a href="https://wristcheck.com/discover/editor's-pick/the-hautlence-hl-sphere-01">HL Sphere 01</a>,” says Meylan.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>A New Synergy</h3>

<p>Limited to 28 pieces, the Linear Series 1 marks a new milestone for Hautlence, which is nearly two-decades-old. The brand plans to limit its production to around 150 pieces a year and widen its appeal with in-house movements made in collaboration with Moser. “We have a dedicated creative team for Hautlence but for the rest of the resources we will be working closely with Moser – be it after-sales service, quality control or proprietary movements. We will limit the production to 150 for the next three to four years and have exclusive distribution in key markets like South Asia and the USA,” says Meylan.</p>

<p>There will also be a slight increase in prices for Hautlence watches, which were earlier available in the range of CHF 15,000 and CHF 150,000. “We really want to offer our best within our limited production. So, the watches will be a little bit higher — starting at around CHF 30,000 and going up to 100,000. That's the main bracket, but then we'll always have some very unique complications like the HL2, so those will be priced around CHF 200,000 to 230,000,” says Meylan. “In the past, we were working in a different direction, which was more focused on high complications, but now we are going to work as much on our design language. It’s going to be novel and exciting,” he says.</p>

<p>This April, as we were out and about in Switzerland, exploring the tiny watchmaking towns around Geneva, we drove up to La-Chaux-de-Fonds — a UNESCO World Heritage site recognised as one of the world’s most important watchmaking centers. Home to over 100 companies – both big and small – this is where more than half of the world’s watches were being made until the beginning of the 20th century.&nbsp;</p>

The tall, triangular, all-glass facade is actually a 17th century farmhouse that was purchased by the company’s founders in 2007. And this is where we got the first glimpse of the new Tourbillon 24 Secondes Architecture, which in many ways, is emblematic of a new aesthetic direction for the brand.&nbsp;</p>

While we have all been in awe of the brand’s hypnotic inclined escapements and multi-axis tourbillon cages, these sculptural timepieces – most of us would agree – aren’t easy to wear. Powered by an all new movement and a wrist-friendly conical case, the Tourbillon 24 Secondes Architecture is not just sleeker than the previous models but also a testament to the brand’s quest for mechanical excellence and accuracy.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>A Conical Case&nbsp;</h3>

<p>To make this complicated watch much more wrist-friendly than its previous offerings, Greubel Forsey has moved over the traditional case construction to a conical frustum ( a hollow cone with its top sliced off) design that has enough room to accommodate the 354 components without making the watch look bulky. Interestingly, the diameter of the caseback (47.05mm) is slightly wider than the bezel (45.5mm) and this lends a compact feel to the overall aesthetics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the case looks perfectly round at first glance, the transparent sides reveal its convex shape from different angles. Thanks to the sapphire crystal ring around the caseband, one can truly admire the complex movement in all its glory from the front, back and even the sides.</p>

<h3>Bare-All Architecture&nbsp;</h3>

<p>Living up to its name, the Tourbillon 24 Secondes Architecture pulls you into its deep, three dimensional face that has plenty of high points to study and admire. The watch dial actually bares open the hand-wound movement made of exceptionally finished components. While Greubel Forsey has been bestowing its complex dials with small sapphire windows since 2007, this is the first time, it has exposed the movement in its entirety, thanks to a transparent mid-case and the sapphire crystal on the caseback.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The most captivating aspect of this three-dimensional piece is the sight it offers from the aperture at 6 '0 clock on the caseband – it’s thrilling to see the 24-second tourbillon (that rotates once every 24 seconds on a 25° to ensure exceptional accuracy) &nbsp;inclination in action from this unusual angle!</p>

<p>Talking about the most obvious functions on the watch, the hours and minutes on this piece are indicated with the help of two large curved and openworked hands crafted out of polished steel. While the small second indication is displayed at &nbsp;8 o'clock, the power reserve indicator is discreetly placed at three o'clock and is supported by an individual titanium bridge. The watch gets its captivating depth from not just the inclined 24-second tourbillon but also from the three-dimensional curved grade 5 titanium bridges of the tourbillon, barrel and power reserve indicator.</p>

<h3>Exceptional Finishing&nbsp;</h3>

<p>As always, Greubel Forsey has used the most exceptional finishing techniques on not just the watch’s exterior but on each and every geometrical component. Polishing grade 5 titanium is no easy feat but in this case, the brand has mirror polished even the arched bridges to perfection — enhancing the allure of super smooth, reflective surfaces. The caseback reveals some portion of the gear train on the large base plate frosted on top and mirror polished on its bevels. The lower bridge for the tourbillon is also concentrically brushed and beautifully hand beveled on the sides. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Greubel Forsey will be making only 11 of the 24 Secondes Architecture in 2022, followed by 18 pieces a year until 2025 for a total of 65 overall.&nbsp;</p>

<p>TAG Heuer has launched a bold new interpretation of its iconic Monaco, which in 1969 redefined the brand's inventiveness with one of the first square cases – a truly avant-garde style with a blue dial, red second hand, and a left-positioned crown. <p>The Legacy Machine Sequential EVO isn't just MB&amp;F’s first ever chronograph wristwatch but also one of the most efficient and accurate multi-functional timepieces that challenges the notion of a conventional chronograph we’ve known all these years. The watch’s fully integrated dual chronograph system features two column-wheel chronographs and a disruptive Twinverter binary switch, offering multiple timing modes including split-second and lap timer modes.</p>

<p>Presented in two zirconium models – one with an atomic orange dial plate and the other in coal black, this unique chronograph has been created in collaboration with independent watchmaker Stephen McDonnell, whose work on the timepiece bears the unmistakable stamp of genius. One of the earliest MB&amp;F collaborators and friends, Stephen reinvented the perpetual calendar complication with the brand’s ground-breaking Legacy Machine Perpetual in 2015.</p>

<p>For the Legacy Machine Sequential EVO, Stephen conceptualized the multiple timing modes with the help of the “Twinverter”- &nbsp;a pusher that allows it to act on both chronographs simultaneously. The displays of the two chronographs can be started, stopped, and reset independently of each other, courtesy the start/stop and reset pushers on their respective sides of the case. The trailblazing Twinverter is the piece's fifth pusher at 9 o'clock, which allows the wearer to control both the chronograph systems of the watch. This binary switch inverts the current start/stop status of each chronograph.</p>

<p>The manual winding movement achieves a power reserve of around 72 hours and offers a balance frequency of 21,600 vph or 3Hz. With its left chronograph, the watch displays hours and minutes at 6 o'clock with seconds at 9 o'clock and minutes at 11 o'clock. Its start/stop pusher has been placed at 10 o'clock with reset appearing at 8 o'clock. The right chronograph has seconds displayed at 3 o'clock and minutes at 1 o'clock with start/stop pusher at 2 o'clock and reset at 4 o'clock. The Legacy Machine Sequential EVO features the power reserve indication at the back of the movement.</p>

<p>Promising enhanced precision and energy efficiency, the chronograph offers different modes. Its independent mode allows the wearer to measure the duration of multiple events with separate starting points and end points, even when the events overlap in timing; the simultaneous mode measures the individual durations of two events that start simultaneously, but have different end points; the cumulative mode measures the individual cumulative durations of two fitful events; and the sequential mode or lap mode measures the individual sub-durations of a single continuous multi-phase event, with prearrangement for sub-durations that last over a minute.</p>

<p>The inventive panoply of modes helps the chronograph go beyond the sports-oriented situations. The LM Sequential EVO easily finds its place in different routines, be it timing tasks at the workplace or preparing delectable meals in the kitchen; just like the watchmaker says, "not a watch for sports, a watch for life."</p>
