Celebrity Wristcheck: June 2021 Round-up

By Jasmine Bastable
29 Jun 20218 min read

Welcome back to Celebrity Wristcheck: a regular round-up of our favourite watches spotted on the wrists of influential figures across the globe, in collaboration with Instagram's @celebwatchspotter! Today, we share our favourite celebrity watch sightings from June: featuring Ed Sheeran, Jay-Z, Kevin Hart and more.

Ed Sheeran

From the likes of Richard Mille and Hublot to obscure indies, what we’ve previously seen of Ed Sheeran's collection shows that his taste is far from what one would call homogenous. Perhaps further adding to its diversity is the singer’s stainless steel Patek Philippe Calatrava ref. 6007A we caught a glimpse of during his interview with BBC Radio 1 in June.

Released in 2019 to celebrate Patek Philippe's newest production building in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, the Calatrava ref. 6007A is a contemporary take on a model that has been Patek's foundation for the better part of 90 years. Limited to 1000 pieces, it comes with a grey-blue dial with a vibrant carbon-style pattern at the centre and is fitted on a blue calfskin strap that features a delicately embossed texture mirroring the same pattern in the dial. This Calatrava’s intricate design language reflects what we can assume was the level of planning that went into Patek's new production building — but on the scale of a well-executed and exclusive timepiece — one certainly fit for an icon like Sheeran.

Retail price: USD 28,351 / HKD 220,140
Estimated market value: USD 85,000+ / HKD 660,000+

Kevin Hart

Actor Kevin Hart was seen wearing the newly-released Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph in 18K yellow gold with a green dial (ref. 26331BA).

You may have noticed that green seems to have taken the watch world by storm lately, which is something I don’t mind at all, personally. AP kicked things off in March by introducing a litany of green dials to several members of the Royal Oak lineup, including the Chronograph donned by Hart here. Limited to 125 pieces, this new release from AP retains the traditional design language seen in Royal Oaks save for the addition of a vivid green Tapisserie dial, which offers a fantastic visual contrast between itself and the sheen of yellow gold it’s encased in. Compounding upon its choice of dial colour, this Chronograph also comes with two additional straps in green rubber and green calfskin. The result? A true lean, mean, green, machine. (Sorry).

Editor’s note: This is one of the first public sightings of the 26331BA, which really doesn’t come as a surprise to us. Hart has a habit of giving us glimpses of AP’s newest releases on his Instagram — even co-hosting with AP CEO François-Henry Bennahmias at the global launch of the “Black Panther” Concept earlier this year.

Jay-Z

“Audemars before all of y’alls.”

Reminding us that he was, in fact, one of the first big-name rappers to sport APs and even collaborating with them back in 2006, rapper and business mogul Jay-Z was spotted wearing the extremely coveted Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Openworked Perpetual Calendar in Black Ceramic (ref. 26585CE)

This elusive beast features an openworked dial with rose gold accents throughout, capturing a level of depth that is truly unrivalled by other brands. Beneath its sapphire dial lies a beautifully finished movement — a hypnotic array of gears, springs and bridges you could easily get lost in. We’re not surprised this piece caught Hova’s eye, or that he’s one of the lucky few that were allocated one.

Retail price: USD 115,800 / HKD 899,152
Estimated market value: USD 430,170+ / HKD 3,340,000+

Drake

“This a Rollie, not a stopwatch, shit don't ever stop.”

We know by now that Drake has a penchant for iced-out Rollies. This time around, he was spotted wearing a 39mm white gold Rolex Datejust Pearlmaster.

This Rolex Pearlmaster features a factory-set bezel with 48 baguette sapphires, and a red grape dial with diamond hour markers and pave diamonds set on the numerals 6 and 9, fitted on a white gold Pearlmaster bracelet. Using the Datejust as its base but beefed up to accomodate more contemporary tastes, this model catapulted the range as a valid haute-jewellery proposition for men. And if the success of the Rainbow Daytona is any indication (see below with Pat Mahomes, for instance — or John Mayer, Post Malone and Mark Wahlberg to name a few others), it’s safe to say that gem-set sports watches have crossed the periphery to suit all genders, and I’m all for it.

Retail price: USD 87,250 / HKD 677,475
Estimated market value: USD 78,950+ / HKD 613,000+

Patrick Mahomes

NFL Player for the Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes was spotted wearing an 18K Everose Gold Rolex Rainbow Daytona factory-set with 11 baguette-cut rainbow-coloured sapphires as hour markers and 36 baguette-cut sapphires set in a rainbow gradation around the bezel.

The Rolex Rainbow Daytona has become a favourite amongst celebrities and has swiftly risen to cult status. First released in 2012 in white and yellow gold, it’s really the Everose gold version released in 2018 that has become the most sought after. Produced in exceedingly small quantities, the rarity of this piece and its factory-set gems are the driving factors for anyone looking to own it — especially if you prefer (relatively) subtle bling over ostentatious ice.

The delicate tone of its gold case is, admittedly, paired beautifully with its rainbow bezel and mid-case set with 56 brilliant-cut diamonds. The black lacquer dial with rose gold hands and sub-registers made of 18k pink gold crystals just tie it all together wonderfully, we think.

Lebron James and Drake

Sitting courtside at his son’s basketball game, basketball player for L.A. Lakers LeBron James was spotted wearing a 41mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual in Coral Red. Released last September in a slew of seven vibrant dial colours, these OPs are reminiscent of the ‘Stella-dial’ Rolexes from the 70’s. While at a (somewhat) more accessible price point than the Stellas that were intended for society’s elite at the time, they’ve retained that same brazen personality and cult collectibility, and have thus become notoriously difficult to get your hands on — with grey market prices skyrocketing up to more than double retail, as you’ll see below.

Retail price: USD 6,500 / HKD 46,000
Estimated market value: USD 13,800+ / HKD 107,120+

“Virgil got a Patek on my wrist going nuts”.

Sitting alongside LeBron, Drake was spotted wearing his custom black-PVD Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5726 set with baguette-cut green emeralds, designed by Virgil Abloh and executed by customisers MAD Paris. Truly as ‘nuts’ as it gets, this is a watch whose sheer audacity broke the internet — and Drizzy can’t stop rapping about it. We understand, though.

Paul Pogba

Preparing for the 2020 Euros, French football player for Manchester United Paul Pogba was spotted wearing a stainless steel Patek Philippe Nautilus Travel Time

Released in 2014, the Nautilus ref. 5990/1A is arguably the most capable Nautilus reference on the market thanks to its dual-time function, its pair of AM/PM indicators and 60-minute chronograph. Featuring a horizontally embossed grey dial, the ref. 5990's symmetrical dial design creates a beautiful aesthetic as its date wheel and chronograph subdial mirror one another at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock respectively.

The Nautilus has always served those with an active lifestyle. For a footballer like Pogba, this often includes international travel, so keeping track of several time zones at once with the simple push of a button does seem like the best way to mix practicality with iconic styling. With France now knocked out of the Euros, we’re sure that Pogba will have plenty of time to enjoy his summer by the pool or the beach where his Nautilus will feel equally at home.

Estimated market value: USD 167,409+ / HKD 1,300,000+

Scottie Pippen

NBA legend Scottie Pippen was spotted on Instagram wearing the newly-released Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph in 18-karat pink gold and black ceramic (case, chronograph pushers and crown).

Released in 2020, this update to the Offshore collection sees the addition of a smoked grey Tapisserie dial, and the replacement of the applied hour markers traditionally seen on the 44mm Offshore Selfwinding Chronographs with large arabic numerals. We have to admit, the contrast of gold and black ceramic is first-class and gives the Offshore, a traditional sports watch, that extra bit of visual oomph

Pippen's appearance in The Last Dance documentary clearly confirmed that he is an avid a watch collector — and as one of the greatest small forwards of all time, we shouldn’t be surprised that he chose to wear a timepiece from one of the watchmaking GOATs.

Retail price: USD 42,900 / HKD 361,000
Estimated market value: USD 60,550+ / HKD 470,000+

Frank Lampard

Overlooking England’s Euro game versus Croatia, football legend Frank Lampard was spotted wearing a platinum Patek Philippe Split Seconds Chronograph with a blue Grand Feu enamel dial and matching blue alligator strap.

The 5370P was originally launched at Baselworld 2015 with a black enamel dial and is perhaps one of the finest watches that Patek Philippe has in its catalogue. It’s a timepiece that allows collectors to show their true appreciation for Patek’s ability to create complicated watches that retain pure and classical designs.

Starting with the dial, you’ll find a rich blue colour rendered by hand in Grand Feu enamel and enhanced by white gold Breguet numerals and hands. The 41mm platinum case is characterized by a mix of clean polished finish and satin brushing on its flanks, leading to the distinctive cabochon capped lugs. And while this is a 21th century watch, its design language is evocative of Patek’s timepieces from the mid-20th century.

Upon flipping over the watch, you’ll find yourself admiring the intricacies of the in-house manually-wound CHR 29-525 PS caliber. Without going into too much detail, just know that there are several technical innovations relating to the split-seconds chronograph function. This means that you get a watch that is traditional in design but powered by the best technological advancements that modern watchmaking has to offer.

Kevin Hart

We know — twice in a row? Sorry, we really couldn’t resist: the man has taste!

Promoting his new Netflix film Fatherhood on Instagram, Kevin Hart was spotted wearing the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar China Edition, limited to 88 pieces. Developed in collaboration with our founder Austen Chu (@horoloupe), this piece is the first full titanium Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar from AP (and amongst the lightest Royal Oaks ever made, weighing in at 104 grams with its full bracelet). Seen here on its striking scarlet rubber strap, this piece’s auspicious red accents pay homage to Chinese culture and AP’s steadfast customer base in the country.

Retail price: USD 88,000 / HKD 659,000
Estimated market value: USD 200,000+ / HKD 1,550,000+
