About the brand

Piaget

The Founder

Despite Piaget’s widespread reputation as a jewelry house, discerning collectors know that the brand has deep roots in the world of horology. Founded by George-Edouard Piaget, the first watches to be produced under the Piaget label date back to 1874.

The company remained in family ownership until the late 1980s, with the third-generation Piaget brothers Gérald and Valentin focusing their efforts around mechanical innovation; and Gérald’s son Yves orchestrating the brand’s expansion in North America, with strategic initiatives such as the “Piaget Society.”

Today, Yves continues to play an advisory role at Piaget, while day-to-day operations are presided over by CEO Benjamin Comar.

History

Another Maison that is as renowned for intricate high jewelry designs as it is for horology, Piaget’s secret expertise lies in its long history of ultra-thin watchmaking. Something of a specialist in this field, the company has been supplying impossibly slim ébauches to the likes of Omega and Audemars Piguet for almost a century.

In many ways, the brand was responsible for kickstarting the ultra-thin arm’s race with the launch of its historic caliber 12P - at the time, the world’s flattest self-winding movement. Piaget’s quest for ever-slimmer mechanical watchmaking continues today, with centerpieces like the Altiplano Ultimate Concept.

In addition to its reputation in the ultra-thin space, Piaget’s catalog of vintage watches - often featuring extravagant metalwork and exotic stone dials - has gained popularity over the past 4-5 years.

Cartier acquired the brand as part of a more significant acquisition in 1988, and today is one of the original companies that laid the foundation for the Richemont Group.
