Glashütte Original

Originally established in the mid-19th century by a loose confederation of Saxonian watchmakers including F.A. Lange and Moritz Grossman, the company that would eventually become Glashütte Original (some 170 years later) began life as a technical school financed by the Duchy of Saxony.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Grossman, Lange and their contemporaries the town of  Glashütte became an epicentre of fine German watchmaking - hence, the company’s name. You’ll still find innovations associated with their lifetime in Glashütte Original products today: such as the three-quarter plate and engraved balance cock.

Named for the historic hamlet in Saxony where legendary German watchmaker Ferdinand Adolf Lange was born (yes - that A. Lange) it’s helpful to think of Glashütte Original as the aforementioned brand’s industrious, slightly more obscure younger brother.

The company traces its heritage back to 1845, and there are many parallels in its modern history with that of the mighty A. Lange & Sӧhne. After spending much of the 20th century as a state-owned Soviet enterprise, Glashütte Original was acquired by the Swatch Group in 2000, leading to the brand’s resurgence abroad, particularly in Asia - where it is known for its precision focused ‘Senator’ collection.
