About the brand

Girard-Perregaux

The Founder

Like many of Switzerland’s great horological dynasties, Girard-Perregaux owes its existence to the union of two watchmaking families based in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Named for Constant Girard and his wife Marie Perregaux, Girard-Perregaux as we know the company today wouldn’t exist without the support of the Bautte Maison.

Established by Jean-François Bautte in 1791, the latter was closely associated with the creation of thin, jeweled cases - allowing Girard-Perregaux to consolidate a wide range of watchmaking crafts under a single roof.

History

Among the first watchmakers in Switzerland to trial vertically integrated production, the company that would become Girard-Perregaux was established in 1856. As a result of a merger with the Bautte manufacturer in 1906, Girard-Perregaux developed expertise in in-house watchmaking early on, accruing over 80 patents along the way.

Most famously, the brand’s emphasis on watchmaking as engineering led in the 1860s to its creation of the emblematic tourbillon with “Three Gold Bridges” - one of the first examples of inverting the traditional relationship between movement and dial for aesthetic purposes.
