Introducing MB&F’s Legacy Machine Sequential EVO

Featuring two column-wheel chronographs and multiple timing modes, MB&F’s latest addition to the Legacy Collection is unlike any other chrono we’ve seen so far. Here’s the first look at this incredible creation by Max Büsser and his long-time friend Stephen McDonnell

The Legacy Machine Sequential EVO isn't just MB&F’s first ever chronograph wristwatch but also one of the most efficient and accurate multi-functional timepieces that challenges the notion of a conventional chronograph we’ve known all these years. The watch’s fully integrated dual chronograph system features two column-wheel chronographs and a disruptive Twinverter binary switch, offering multiple timing modes including split-second and lap timer modes.

Presented in two zirconium models – one with an atomic orange dial plate and the other in coal black, this unique chronograph has been created in collaboration with independent watchmaker Stephen McDonnell, whose work on the timepiece bears the unmistakable stamp of genius. One of the earliest MB&F collaborators and friends, Stephen reinvented the perpetual calendar complication with the brand’s ground-breaking Legacy Machine Perpetual in 2015.

An MB&F Chronograph: Time To Create Legacy

For the Legacy Machine Sequential EVO, Stephen conceptualized the multiple timing modes with the help of the “Twinverter”-  a pusher that allows it to act on both chronographs simultaneously. The displays of the two chronographs can be started, stopped, and reset independently of each other, courtesy the start/stop and reset pushers on their respective sides of the case. The trailblazing Twinverter is the piece's fifth pusher at 9 o'clock, which allows the wearer to control both the chronograph systems of the watch. This binary switch inverts the current start/stop status of each chronograph.

The manual winding movement achieves a power reserve of around 72 hours and offers a balance frequency of 21,600 vph or 3Hz. With its left chronograph, the watch displays hours and minutes at 6 o'clock with seconds at 9 o'clock and minutes at 11 o'clock. Its start/stop pusher has been placed at 10 o'clock with reset appearing at 8 o'clock. The right chronograph has seconds displayed at 3 o'clock and minutes at 1 o'clock with start/stop pusher at 2 o'clock and reset at 4 o'clock. The Legacy Machine Sequential EVO features the power reserve indication at the back of the movement.

Promising enhanced precision and energy efficiency, the chronograph offers different modes. Its independent mode allows the wearer to measure the duration of multiple events with separate starting points and end points, even when the events overlap in timing; the simultaneous mode measures the individual durations of two events that start simultaneously, but have different end points; the cumulative mode measures the individual cumulative durations of two fitful events; and the sequential mode or lap mode measures the individual sub-durations of a single continuous multi-phase event, with prearrangement for sub-durations that last over a minute.

The inventive panoply of modes helps the chronograph go beyond the sports-oriented situations. The LM Sequential EVO easily finds its place in different routines, be it timing tasks at the workplace or preparing delectable meals in the kitchen; just like the watchmaker says, "not a watch for sports, a watch for life."

Its complex movement has been housed inside a 44mm zirconium case, which is water-resistant upto 80 meters. Its internal FlexRing damping system is another addition that makes the chronograph resilient to shocks. The two chronographs linked to the same oscillator present a clever mechanism that knocks the timing errors due to minute chronometric discrepancies on the head.

This impeccable timekeeping machine has been paired with an integrated rubber strap with a titanium folding buckle, complementing the deep luster of the case's silvery-gray metal. The geometry of the sapphire-crystal dome witnesses some changes to accommodate the suspended balance and minimize the overall height of the LM Sequential EVO. The EVO series follows the codes of the Legacy Machine collection, zeroing in on wearability as well as versatility.
