MB&amp;F is a Swiss watch brand that has revolutionized the world of watchmaking with its unconventional approach and innovative designs. Founded by Maximilian Büsser, a former executive at Jaeger-LeCoultre and Harry Winston, MB&amp;F has been pushing the boundaries of traditional watchmaking since its inception. Futuristic yet nostalgic, technical but playful – MB&amp;F is a celebration of the avant-garde and a testament to the triumphs of uninhibited creativity. An artistic concept laboratory, MB&amp;F’s creations venture far beyond the realms of traditional watchmaking, resulting in extraordinarily complex machines, which also happen to tell the time. Founded by Maximillian Büsser, an industry veteran armed with years of experience at Jaeger-LeCoultre and Harry Winston, MB&amp;F was always meant to encourage independent watchmaking professionals to develop radical watches. The road less traveled should not have journeyed alone, and the Maison has indeed amassed an extensive list of “Friends”: talented artists, watchmakers, designers, and manufacturers whose collaborative efforts shine through each of the final products.

The Founder

Büsser’s favorite quote – “A creative adult is a child who survived” – certainly manifests in his “machines.” While the Horological Machines are reminiscent of science fiction films and animated television shows from the 1960s-80s, the Legacy Machines draw their inspiration from 19th-century watchmaking and classical (by MB&amp;F standards!) silhouettes. MB&amp;F’s creations aren’t limited to the wrist: the brand also produces clocks, spaceships, and toy robots – all of which seem to have been plucked straight out of a child’s whimsical daydream -- then cranked up a thousand notches. The details on these three-dimensional kinetic sculptures are exquisite down to the minutiae, with some of the complex movements featuring over 600 hand-assembled components.

For the past 17 years, MB&F has captivated the world with its unorthodox and visionary timepieces, each one a testament to the brand's unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional horology. The introduction of the M.A.D.1 RED marks a significant milestone in this horological odyssey, offering enthusiasts a more accessible avenue to experience the signature MB&F flair. Crafted from durable stainless steel with the same innovative case structure as its predecessor, the M.A.D.1 RED boasts a striking new look, with a vibrant cherry red hue that commands attention and instantly sets it apart from the crowd. At the heart of this captivating timepiece lies an inverted and modified Miyota 821A movement, powered by a triple-blade winding rotor in titanium and tungsten. This unidirectional winding system not only ensures effortless manual winding but also adds a touch of visual excitement, especially when the Super-LumiNova kicks in, illuminating the rotating rotor. The lateral time display, featuring two revolving cylinders for the hours and minutes, adds a touch of avant-garde charm to the M.A.D.1 RED, imbuing it with a distinctive character that sets it apart from conventional timepieces. The classic round winding crown, a departure from the original M.A.D.1's more contemporary design, provides a seamless user experience, allowing for easy time adjustments.

The MB&F M.A.D.2 GREEN stands out with its unconventional design and mechanical features. This 42mm stainless steel watch features raised central subdials for hours and minutes, inspired by DJ turntables, set against a green dial that showcases vinyl-like grooves and satin finishes. The standout element is the visible stroboscopic platter, doubling as the automatic winding rotor, which spins with every movement of the wrist. Super-LumiNova stop pins and a platter ring inspired by the Technics SL-1200 add further character to the design. At the center, subtle metal markers indicate the jumping hour and trailing minutes, providing a unique take on time display without traditional hands. Powered by the selfwinding Calibre G101, the watch offers a 64-hour power reserve and is water resistant to 30 meters. M.A.D.2 GREEN

The M.A.D. Editions M.A.D.1 Blue (ref. M.A.D. 1 Blue) debuted in 2021 as a 450-piece limited edition, initially offered exclusively to friends of MB&F. Striking for its unconventional lateral time display, the watch channels founder Maximilian Büsser’s signature futurism into a more accessible silhouette, without compromising conceptual daring. Its vivid blue central rotor and orbital display architecture offer a dynamic take on contemporary independent watchmaking. 
 
The 42mm stainless steel case houses a modified Miyota 821A movement, inverted and adapted to drive the peripheral rotating hours and minutes. A domed sapphire crystal tops the watch, while mineral glass is used on the caseback – a conscious decision balancing aesthetics with pricing. The lateral time indication is read from the side via two rotating cylinders, while the oversized top-mounted rotor in electric blue spins vividly across the face. 
 
Though not part of MB&F’s mainline Legacy Machine or Horological Machine families, the M.A.D.1 Blue retains the design DNA that made the brand a favourite among collectors who value originality over convention. Its limited run and unique display ensure its status as one of the decade’s most talked-about independent releases.
