About the brand

Cartier

The Founder

Established in 1847 by the eponymous Louis-François Cartier, few brands in the 21st century are as synonymous with artful watchmaking as Cartier. At first, a business confined to Paris, Louis-François’s grandsons - Louis, Pierre, and Jacques - transformed their patriarch’s humble workshop into a global byword for luxury.

The three brothers were key figures in the development and expansion of the Cartier brand during the early 20th century. They each managed different aspects of the business, contributing significantly to its international prestige and success. Louis is often credited with developing some of the brand's most iconic designs, including the Cartier Tank watch. Pierre played a significant role in expanding Cartier's business internationally, and finally, Jacques was responsible for managing and expanding the Cartier store in London. Each brother brought his unique vision and skills to the business, enabling Cartier to expand geographically and innovate in design and marketing. Their combined efforts in design innovation, strategic expansion, and cultivation of an elite clientele were key to establishing Cartier's lasting legacy in the luxury goods industry.

History

Famously dubbed “the king of jewelers” by King Edward VII, Cartier continues to shod its vast clientele in elegant, often gem-bearing designs in the modern era. To millions around the globe, it is the inventor of such charming accessories as the Juste un Clou, yet the company has long been equally masterful in the art of shaped watchmaking.

Since the early 20th century, Cartier has introduced collectors to a multitude of groundbreaking horological designs: drawing on art, science, and the natural world in order to change the way we wear watches. Often, quite literally.
