Launched in 2006, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Rubens Barrichello II limited edition remains one of the most sought-after discontinued Royal Oak Offshore models to this day. The watch takes its name, of course, from the famous Brazilian Formula One driver who retired in 2011. When it was launched, the model was made available in three different case materials: 1000 pieces in titanium, 500 pieces in 18k pink gold, and finally, 150 pieces in platinum.
The piece we have here is the rarest version, with a full platinum case. Whilst the watch is visually commanding, it is actually only 42mm in size! The watch is almost a pre-cursor to the Royal Oak Offshore “Survivor” and came at a time where Audemars Piguet begun being more daring with their designs. As you can see just by looking at the watch, many elements of Formula One were incorporated, from the chronograph pushers shaped like air-extractors, the bracelet links designed like racer pedals, to the black ceramic bezel shaped like brake discs. Notice also how all the screws are different and reminiscent of hex screws? AP really went all out for the design of this timepiece.
The dial is clearly legible with the tachymeter scale and sub-registers in white, contrasting nicely with the blue of the dial. Interestingly, the ‘Grande Tapisserie’ motif of the dial is partially skeletonized which is one of the earliest modern examples of such design in a watch. Even to this day, it’s not something often seen in the Royal Oak Offshore line.
Presented in excellent condition with its full set of accessories, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Rubens Barrichello II offered here is a great opportunity for collectors to add a rare gem to their collection.
